Chilean cherries always reach the Chinese market in large volumes at the beginning of winter. JD Fresh worked together with Chilean cherry exporter Garces Fruit to organize a festive launch of the first sea-freight Chilean cherries on the 19th of November. The cargo ship left Chile with 1,200 tons of Chilean cherries and will cross the ocean to reach China, the largest consumer market for cherries in the world. And JD will take advantage of the arrival of this enormous volume of Chilean cherries to initiate a wave of price reductions. This winter will be fresh and affordable.
JD already kicked off the 2021 Chilean cherry season with online sales of air-freight cherries on the 11th of November, which is an important commercial holiday in China. The air-freight cherries sold very well. The monetary value of Chilean cherries in their original box increased by nearly 90% in the period up to the 15th of November.
95% of premium Chilean cherries are destined for the Chinese market
The sea-freight cherries ordered by JD Fresh are expected to arrive in China by the second week of December. According to the Chilean ambassador in China, around 95% of the Chilean cherry production volume is destined for the Chinese market. This first cargo ship mainly carries J-grade and JJ-grade cherries. Chilean cherry exporter Garces Fruit guaranteed that their largest and most delicious cherries were reserved for JD Fresh.
JD Fresh will begin advanced sales in early December. Consumers can vie with each other for reasonably-priced, top-quality Chilean cherries, and they will receive their cherries as soon as the cargo ship reaches China. The shipping cost for sea-freight is lower than air-freight, so consumers will enjoy a significant price decline compared to air-freight cherries earlier this season. Compared to the Chilean cherries that arrived by air-freight on the 24th of October, the sea-freight cherries are riper and cost less than half the price.
